The Radio & the Road: Driving & Listening as a Heuristic for Social Theory

The audio essay works from Henri Lefebvre’s concept of ‘everyday life’ to see how driving and listening to the radio can function as a means of bridging social realities experienced on the ground (or perhaps, more appropriately, the ‘street’) with their representations in art, literature, philosophy and social theory. The piece includes excerpts from the works of writers like Whitman, Kerouac, and Ginsberg; samples of songs from artists from the Beatles to Bob Marley; theoretical concepts from David Harvey and Walter Benjamin; audio clips from contemporary politics and popular culture; as well as recordings of my own reflections on the road.
